That Tone!

An article came out in Guitar Player Magazine today that caught my eye.  It's titled:  Tom Morello: “This Is the Top Song That Inspired My Guitar Playing and Tone”.

I read it and was somewhat surprised to learn what song that was for Tom.  Believe it or not it was a song by the recently deceased Allan Holdsworth called "Metal Fatigue".  He says in the article that the harmony effect Holdsworth used in that song was what inspired him to look into harmonizing units, which ultimately led him to the DigiTech Whammy Pedal that we've all come to recognize as being a big part of Tom's tone.

I think for all of us, whether we play an instrument or not, there's probably that one song that just resonates with us with respect to guitar tone.  You know that one song where suddenly you just have to break out your finest air-guitar and start jamming your butt off!  If not one particular song, then at least there is one particular album where the guitar tones are so juicy, so riveting, so spiritually relevant to your soul that you could listen to it over and over again and never tire of it.

For me the band is Rush.  Alex Lifeson is my personal guitar hero, and I'd have to say the song that did it for me and still does to this day is "Cygnus X-1" from their Farewell to Kings album.  Compared to the guitar tones of today, Alex's tones would seem somewhat tame.  But for me, there's just something about them that grab me and speak to me.  I can't describe it.  It's just "that tone" for me.

So I'm curious, what it is for you?  What song or album has "that tone" for you?  That tone that sends shivers down your spine or gives you goose bumps.  Let us all know in the comments section below.  I think it will be interesting to see what "that tone" is for everybody.

Well we're off to Fat Cat Recording Studio this morning to record a couple of new tracks.  We are SO stoked to get in there and get the creative juices flowing.  I'll keep you updated on things for sure.  Hey do us a favor and subscribe to our site if you like, that way you'll know when we make new posts or have shows or whatever.

Talk to ya later!
